Gray's Bigfoot Hits Big Time

A Supernatural Syndication
|
Story: Nicholas Lovecraft
|
Only the best of shows are syndicated. Since
syndication first began, only the finest made the cut.
Joining the likes of Buffy, The Office, The Simpsons
and Family Guy - Supernatural become the next show
of legend. Nationally airing at 10AM weekdays on
TNT, an entire new world will experience the magic of
Supernatural.
Before the CW (Now the UPN) even knew what a hit
they had on their hands, OSH championed this
original genius. To my death I will state for the record
that neither my childhood experiences with Eric Kripke
or his Toledo roots persuaded my feelings and
critique of the show. It is simply the story itself that won
myself and millions of others over. A solid storyline,
personable characters and great production have
made Supernatural the icon it has become.
Now in only its fourth season it will be immortalized in
the golden halls of cable/satelite TV. But one has to
wonder how this may affect future seasons
considering it has been slated since season 3 for
termination. Thanks to the fans, it was kept around but
one still must wonder how much longer. We are in
Season 4 and a 5 is signed off on but a storm
approaches.
In addition to the syndication, it has been a great
opportunity for the cream of the crop. Starring roles for
Jensen Ackels in the 2005 film Devour and last years
hit My Bloody Valentine in 3D while Jared Padalecki
has racked up 3 with 2005's House of Wax & Cry Wolf
and last years smash hit remake of Friday the 13TH.
He also appeared in the 2007 film House of Fears as
J.P. but was not credited for the role. In addition to the
success of 2009 for the Supernatural family, executive
producer McG knocked our lights out with
Terminator:Salvation - sending a message to the
industry that a new visionary director is ready for the
big screen. And with talks underway for T5 and a
remake of the Monster Squad this camp is delighted.
With all the success one important piece seems to be
left out in the cold, my fellow Toledo native Eric Kripke.
It should be no surprise that he has stepped down
although it is being confirmed a Season 6 has been
picked up but OSH can assure you that he will stay on
as an executive producer and Sera Gamble will still
be there to keep it from "falling down." And with Eric
still contributing in a lesser role there is the opportunity
to branch out and become the next cream to rise.
OSH does know more in regards to his next project
but we swore to keep it in house - respectfully.
As with many great shows there is a bitter pill to
swallow; it will all come to an end eventually. The
question is when and how. But thanks to syndicated
television, Supernatural will live on in the hearts of
millions for decades to come.

While on vacation last August I received a late
night phone call from a relative in Spokane
Washington. My cousin, a manager at the
famous Davenport Hotel of Spokane asked, "Do
you know some dude named John Carpenter?
(laughing) He's staying here for a film he is
shooting." Once I got passed the ball-busting
opening of the call I went on for almost an hour;
grilling him with every conceivable question I
could imagine. With limited knowledge of the
answers and a No-Call order from Echo Lake
Productions, my vacation came to an abrupt end.
For the next 6 weeks I used every resource at my
disposal to unlock the mystery surrounding both
John and his future. To my delight I discovered
that not only was John shooting his first feature
film since the 2001 Ghosts of Mars and this was
just the beginning.
So here is what I found out. His first film, The
Ward opens nationwide September 24Th, then
there are 2 more horror films set to shoot this
year, L.A. Gothic and The Prince. Also, he is in
development for 3 more films, The Riot
(Nicholas Cage was tagged to star but talks have
broke down), Escape From New York and They
Live. Whether or not any of these come to fruition
is a crap shoot but considering the " in-thing" are
remakes I'd have to bet heavily on yes. Ideally,
this ultimately means at least a decade of
Carpenter influence in a genre that needs a fix!
The talk of the horror world, Carpenter's The
Ward is the hottest topic out there. The plot
consists of a thriller centered on an
institutionalized young woman who becomes
terrorized by a ghost. The film stars hot leading
ladies, Amber Heard (Pineapple Express,
Zombieland & The Stepfather) and Danielle
Panabaker (Mr. Brooks, Friday the 13TH & The
Crazies).

So, armed with a great cast and excellent
screenplay, the 61 year old John Carpenter is
back from a 9 year hiatus from film with a
vengeance. Too bad he was a year behind
Zombie's Halloween 2, I would have loved to
see who won that battle although the outcome is
obvious. "All hail the master! Horror Master -
John Carpenter has returned!"
........................More to come
We've all heard it before, "Fate is a funny thing,
you never know whats in store." And we all have
our stories; how I met my wife/husband or after a
huge fight we became best friends. For me it
was a new direction and the path walking right in
the front door.
I'd had OSH running for 2 years when I made the
decision to champion local independent
filmmakers. Literally, the next day independent
filmmaker Bob Gray came right up to my register
to mail out promotional materials for his first
feature film - Bigfoot. He modestly outlined his
film to me and then I explained what I intended
to do with my horror magazine. We hit it off and a
few days later I conducted my first interview with
Bob and our friendship began.
Throughout the filming I was there like a sponge
soaking up water. I did everything I could to help
and support his film because I believed in his
goal and respected his story. And he
reciprocated by educating me in filmmaking and
attending our first live event. I was proud to be
his friend, proud of the choice I had made to
support independent filmmakers and proud to
be a part of filmmaking history in Mentor.
His film was the talk of the town and the entire
community respected and championed Bob
which is not an odd thing considering the man
he is. You will not find a more open and
approachable person; a man happy to drink and
talk with a person for hours even if he just met
you. It's the little things that speak volumes to us
all.
Surprisingly up to this point no one knew of
Bob's achievements except for the small group
of family and friends. Gray, a graduate of Mentor
High School, headed out west after graduation
and landed in Hollywood. After a few lucky
breaks he landed small parts in The Stepfather 2
(Choir Boy) & Streets (Cowboy). The later film
doesn't ring a bell with most folks but mention
Christina Applegate and the ears sprout up!
During Bob's experiences in Hollywood, his
S.A.G. membership was sponsored by an idol of
mine; a Mr. Roger Corman. Does the name ring
any bells? For the clueless, he is the Godfather
of the B Horror/Sci-Fi films we all so love.
After his stint in acting, Bob got behind the
cameras ultimately directing a premier home
shopping channel and later shooting sporting
events all over the country for ESPN, Disney, ABC
and others. Currently he still works sporting
events while trying to juggle his filmmaking
company. It's a hard road; the glamour and fame
only come to a small few but his comes in the
form of personal satisfaction. A satisfaction of
being able to live his dream job - something
most of us only wish for but never attain.
It has been a long road for Gray's dream to
become reality but the day draws near. March
30th, 2010 Bigfoot will be released worldwide
and an entirely new future awaits the Mentor
native. A future I will sit down and discuss with
him exclusively just for you and in a brand new
format! So join us April 2nd, 2010 for an all-new
OSH.com and exclusive video interview with
Mentor's own, Bob Gray.

Krueger circa 1984 - The Original
|
The New Krueger - Bay's 2010
|
Story by: Nicholas Villa II
|
In 1972 Wes Craven shocked the world with his debut
film, The Last House on the Left. Five years later he
returned with The Hills Have Eyes. From 1977 to 1984
he compiled 5 more films (2 made for TV) to include
the cult classic Swamp Thing starring the former Mrs.
Carpenter, Adrian Barbeau. Invitation to Hell aired on
TV May 24th of that year but the true genius of his work
would come just a few months later.
November 16th, 1984 the world was introduced to
Freddy Krueger and fell instantly in love with the
twisted terror. A Nightmare on Elm Street grossed over
$1,271,000 its opening weekend and totaled over
$10,800,000 worldwide by the last weekend of
January 1985; roughly that's $900,000/360,000
people a week @ an average ticket price of $2.50!
With a total budget of $1,800,000 (Estimated),
Nightmare's worldwide net profits were $9,000,000
and kicked in by Tuesday following its opening
weekend! Not since the legendary Halloween, had a
horror film performed such an illustrious achievement.
Now we spring ahead 26 years later and
producer Michael Bay takes his stab at yet
another celebrated horror franchise. Samuel
Bayer is Bay's choice for director and the new
cast includes Jackie Earle Haley as Krueger and
Rooney Mara will play the role of Nancy
Thompson.
In a June 9, 2009 interview, Craven expressed
his displeasure in the remaking of his 1984 film,
primarily because the filmmakers chose not to
have him as a consultant to the film (unlike with
the 2009 remake The Last House on the Left
where he "shepherded it towards production"). In
contrast, Robert Englund, who portrayed Freddy
throughout the franchise, feels it is time for A
Nightmare on Elm Street to be remade. Englund
likes the idea of being able to "exploit the
dreamscape" with CGI and other technologies
that did not exist when Craven was making the
original Nightmare on Elm Street in 1984.
Subsequently, Bayer believes that the film is
designed to pay homage to what Craven did in
1984, but not replicate it entirely. Bayer's goal is
to bring Nightmare on Elm Street and Freddy to
a new generation of audience members just as
he was able to accomplish with Friday the 13TH.
Although this one lacks the charming Jared
Padalecki to swoon the ladies into theater seats,
a sound cast and another great director are at
the helm.
As with every remake OSH must review we only
can hope for a duplication of Bay's first horror
project. I for one and looking forward to jumping
out of my seat and having a difficult time
sleeping for the next week or so after the
screening! And for those OSH fans we've added
a bonus.....a chance to win free screening
passes for the advanced premiere on April 28TH
along with some cool stuff and an OSH T-Shirt!

Not only did Nightmare breath new life into the
horror/slasher genre, it launched the career of mega-
superstar, Johnny Depp! And the rest is history as they
say. A hit horror franchise, Nightmare and the
character of Freddy Krueger has reached the
illustrious status of Horror Icon; you know like
Frankenstein, Dracula, The Wolf Man and such?
2010 and not playing this time...
